John Bohley

John is the principal consultant for Boards on Course.  He has served in management roles in the non-profit, public, and business sectors and has reported to and served on numerous Boards of Directors throughout his career.  John has a master’s degree in social work from West Virginia University (Morgantown, West Virginia). He is a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) in Ohio and has a doctoral degree in public administration from Nova University (now Nova Southeastern University) in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

John completed the Policy Governance Academy in 2005 and is a GOVERN for IMPACT Governance Systems Professional (GSP) and recently co-authored a board governance book titled Better Boards for a Better World: An Integrated Practice of Policy Governance and Servant-Leadership (2023). With Larry Spears, a leading world authority on servant-leadership.

Over his years of service, which are ongoing, John has actively contributed to the GOVERN for IMPACT community through:

  • Presenting at GOVERN conferences for over a decade with fresh ideas and thought-leadership
  • Presenting at Face-to-Face Advanced Practice Forums and Advanced Webinars
  • Serving on the Board in 2016/2017
  • Being a member of the Consistency Team for the past few years
  • Serving on the Professional Education Team and being instrumental in the development of the Policy Governance Proficiency Program exam
  • Serving as member-at-large on GOVERN’s Leadership Team

Over these many contributions, John has been an honest, sincere, caring person with integrity.  John is willing to gently ask the tough questions, he is generous with his knowledge and ideas, and is a strong encourager and supporter of people.
